Bennetta Cannon Horne, PhD
Board Member
Dr. Horne is an experienced higher education administrator and a microbiologist. She received her bachelor’s degree in Biology from Xavier University of Louisiana in 1989, her MS in Microbiology, Immunology, and Parasitology from Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center in 2000, and her PhD in Higher Education Administration from the University of New Orleans in 2022.
She has held administrative positions at Xavier and Tulane Universities, research positions at the University of Alabama at Birmingham and at Children’s Hospital of New Orleans, and adjunct teaching positions at William Carey College School of Nursing and Dillard University. Dr. Horne was named the inaugural manager of the Tulane University School of Medicine (TUSOM) Office of Multicultural Affairs and has subsequently been named Director. She was then named Assistant Dean for Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion for TUSOM. Dr. Horne is also a graduate of the inaugural cohort of Tulane University’s Emerging Leadership Program.
Dr. Horne currently leads the Tulane’s EDI Council, is responsible for EDI training for the entire School of Medicine and serves as advisor to several student organizations serving various affinity groups.
She is responsible for fostering an all-inclusive environment for current and prospective trainees, faculty, staff, and administrators from traditionally underrepresented populations. These populations include not only groups who identify through race but also through religious beliefs, sexual identity, as well as other non-traditional students. Her office also works to increase cultural sensitivity of these groups as well as to enhance the retention and academic success of all trainees. Throughout her career, Mrs. Horne has been active in medical student education and graduate education. She has mentored many students and perhaps her most prized role is that of surrogate “Mama” to all her students!

Dr. Horne believes that The 15 White Coats is tantamount to supporting the broadening of access to medicine and medical education, the elimination of health disparities, and the uplift of marginalized and minoritized individuals and communities.
